چکیده
Wound infection plays an important role in the development of chronicity, delaying wound healing. It is one of the health problems that are caused by the invasion of pathogenic organisms. This study aimed to identify the bacterial pathogens present in wounds and to determine their antibiotic susceptibility profile to the most common antibiotics used in therapy. One hundred and fifty swab samples were collected from patients with diverse types of wounds attending Federal Medical Centre, Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria from September, 2013 to March, 2014. Wound swab was collected using sterile cotton swab and processed for bacterial isolation and susceptibility testing to antimicrobial agents following standard bacteriological techniques. A total of one hundred and twenty one (121) bacterial isolates were recovered. Polymicrobial infection was found in 7 (4.6%) of the wound samples and mainly constituted of two species. The most common association was Staphylococcus aureus/Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus/Escherichia coli. Twenty nine (19.3%) of the wound cultures yielded no bacterial growth. The most common bacterial species detected S. aureus (27.3%), followed by Proteus mirabilis 15 (%), Klebsiella aerogenes 15 (%), Proteus vulgaris 4(%) and Staphylococcus saprophyticus 1 (%). Resistance to antibiotics was high particularly for Nitrofurantoin (100%), tetracyclines (97.57%), Amoxillins (97.57%), Cotrimoxazole (95.1%), Nalidixic acid (95.1%), Subtamine (75.6%), Ofloxacin (70.7%) and Erythromycins (60.9%). Our study revealed that susceptibility to antibiotics varies with the different organisms implicated in wound infection, thus, indicating the essence of microbiological testing before prescribing a drug for treatment.

Prevalence of Vancomycin Resistance in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus
Background & Aims: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common pathogens in nosocomial infections. Vancomycin is the most important therapeutic drug of choice for treatment of infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. Therefore, vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) or vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) strains are warning...
متن کاملA Survey of Frequency and pattern of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcu s aureus Isolated from nosocomial infections
Abstract Background and Objective: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major pathogen involved in nosocomial infections. Because of increasing antibiotic resistance of these strains, treatment of these infections has become very difficult. This study aimed to determine the frequency and drug resistance pattern of MRSA isolates from nosocomial infections in hospi...

Background: Diabetic foot infections a common complication of diabetes. Staphylococcus aureus is most common pathogen associated with diabetic foot infection. Frequency of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) associated with diabetic foot infection at other country is 15-30% and important cause at hospital acquired infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of...
متن کاملPrevalence of clindamycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus induced by macrolide resistance
Introduction: Since the incidence of various infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus increases, the use of effective antibiotics such as clindamycin has been growing to treat the systemic and local infections caused by such organisms. Antibiotic-resistant species are emerging and spreading in today's communities due to misuse of antibiotics and incomplete treatment, turning into a serious ch...

Staphylococcus aureus, as one of the main agentsfor hospital infections,is considered as highly important because they show resistance to a wide range of antibiotics.Resistance to selective antibiotics such as vancomycin is a serious problemin the medical community; thus it seems rational to use alternative substances for treating these bacteria. The aim of this study isto investigate the preval...
